about

The titles “Urwisy z Doliny Młynów”, “Klementynka i Klemens” and “Janka” stand for the series trilogy which had as its common denominator the production cooperation between the Polish TVP and the German WDR, plus the director, actors, and finally the music by Andrzej Korzyński who showed in his soundtracks a symphonic side.

Even if music pieces included in this edition seem to merge into a coherent soundtrack for just one series, they are actually the part of a much larger story. “Janka” series marked the continuation and the culmination of the cooperation between Korzyński and Janusz Łęski on the latter’s series cycle. The artist himself admitted that the work was very active, fruitful and fast, and that it yielded, over just a few years, the total of seven (!) hours of music. Certain themes were naturally repeated and developed, which in hindsight only highlights the narrative of the pictures, all of them giving a closer look into the bucolic, countryside life.

The composer admits that the work on the Polish-German production gave him a lot of freedom and new artistic venues. The music was essentially written based on the scenario. I did watch “Janka” of course, but later on. Well, I probably skipped some episodes – laughs Korzyński, and adds that he was very comfortable with the orchestra formula approved by producers. Symphonic music suited me quite well – he recalls. I was happy to be able to peacefully write a standard score. It was relaxing, and checking the scores on the piano was fun. Besides I could make use of all the symphonic orchestra. You could hear “the woodwinds” “the brasses”, and a quintet. In Poland we had this tendency of replacing musicians with top-overs and synthesizers – we just fooled listeners to save money. In that project I had no financial limitations, and what’s more Germans were very attentive to technical details. Recordings of “Janka” soundtrack were made over a short time, at the Polish Radio studios. The orchestra was directed by Jan Pruszak. From time to time, you could also here Andrzej Korzyński in piano, Rhodes and synthesizer parts.

That’s how listeners were offered one of the best symphonic soundtracks ever written for Polish (and Polish-German) series. It builds up into a consistent musical story which develops with new, incoming motives, is catchy and flows through, taking the listener into a fairy tale universe. It encapsulates an endless melody and ever changing harmony, and is greatly inspired by Mahler – Korzyński’s favorite composer. In “Janka”, I tried to sneak some Neoromanticism notes – clarified Andrzej Korzyński. The harmony does not work itself out, it does not reach the keynote level. The melody flows through like a river, continues in follow-ups, lasts eternally, and the man can float on the surface of this never ending harmonic fluidity. This is a beautiful idea.

Jedna z najbardziej barwnych i poruszających ścieżek dźwiękowych w twórczości Andrzeja Korzyńskiego.

„Janka” to doskonałe kino familijne, osadzone w początkach XX wieku, wciągające w swoją fabułę i nastolatków, i dorosłych.

Nagrania zremasterowano z oryginalnych taśm z archiwum kompozytora. Album kontynuuje filmową serię GAD Records, w której ukazały się m.in. „Dzięcioł” Henryka Kuźniaka i Juliusza Loranca, „Doktor Murek” Lucjana Kaszyckiego czy „Życie Kamila Kuranta” Wojciecha Głucha. W przygotowaniu kolejne tytuły.
